Dolores Cortés: “Being a doctor makes me design with clinical empathy”

– What are you doing in Sotogrande? Vacation?

-Not working. I’m doing a wide variety of designs for the So / Sotogrande luxury hotel. They commissioned me to make the uniforms and in the end I have made a multitude of textiles and even murals.

– But his were not swimsuits?

-Yes Yes. I already told Accord that mine was something else. But in the end I launched myself into this adventure because I loved the concept of a «revolutionized farmhouse» of this space. I did what nobody does for hotel uniforms: fill them with patterns and color to convey something that is very Spanish: joy. I have even created the logo with colorful carnations, fans and an arch that symbolizes an Andalusian farmhouse. I’ve had a lot of fun because I’ve done everything you don’t have to do when designing something corporate, which tends to be neutral.

–Since the 50s the firm Dolores Cortés has been present in swimwear What is the secret of this success?

-The most important: constant work with enthusiasm. This makes you continually train and inform yourself to seek excellence.

– Do you think it is a good time to start in this sector?

–My mother started in the post-war period with terrible socioeconomic conditions.

–Asking him about the beach or the mountains is silly …

– I am Valencian and I adore the sea and the mountains.

–Innovating swimsuits with so little fabric is like getting the square of the circle?

–You have to give freedom to the square, something like that

– What would you say to those girls who go to the beach with the top and bottom completely random?

–Beauty is in being different.

“Do you see a bikini with a pinstripe?”

– Absolutely not. I have tried it and I do not like how they are.

–Biquini, triquini, whole swimsuit?

– To everything yes, everything depends on the person and the moment.

– Does beauty have a size?

-The models are not the usual size that other people wear, especially in height. Beauty has the size that makes you more beautiful.

“Is the tan out of order or is that what those with milky skin say?”

–That’s what we with milky skin say. We keep seeing it.

– When did you fall in love with youth fashion?

–I was born between swimsuits, fabrics, rubber bands… I am the second generation of this company. Imagine that I designed my own communion outfit animated by my mother. And that I myself set my own course because I studied two medical specialties. Internal and rehabilitation. I chose this second one because there were no guards and I could do swimsuits in the afternoon.

– The print that I would never put in swimwearO?

“Just like that … I would never put a pineapple on a belly, but you never know.”

–When a diva arrives at your atelier, how do you react, are you even more diva?

-I’m quite a natural woman and I usually fit in very well with all kinds of profiles. It’s called clinical empathy. Many times you have to pull the facet of doctor. I get along well with divas and with those who have special needs, such as a woman with a mastectomy.

“If the monkey dresses in silk, is it still a monkey?”

–I believe in the beauty of all kinds of bodies.

–That garment and that designer that you have never understood …

–I can’t with the leggings.

-Are you affected by bad reviews?

-As everyone. But I abide by them as they say when one is in court.

– What famous do you see with your designs?

-To all the world. From Merkel to Jaqueline Kennedy

“Have you ever thought about becoming a knight or does it bore you?”

-Many times. I always have it in mind

-That they love me.

–Where does it reset and come back as new?

–In my garden, I like to get tired and leave my mind blank. And now in Sotogrande, which has surprised me. I imagined a dry coastal place and I have found a garden looking at Africa. Now I understand why many people take refuge here in one of the ends of the peninsula.

– They say that if you want to dedicate yourself to porn, you have to start with the artistic name and that the best is the one obtained by joining the name of your pet with that of your street, what would yours be?

– This question I am not going to answer, but we could laugh a lot.
