Biscayan bassist Mikel Caballero, a vital presence in Basque rock over the past two decades as a member of Gatibu, passed away unexpectedly in Mexico during a brief break. The sad news was confirmed by the Geuria news portal.
Mikel Caballero, born in Basauri in 1966, played a crucial role in the success of Gatibu for almost 21 years, starting from its formation in 2000. The band, led by Alex Sardui, also included guitarist Haimar Arejita and bassist Gaizka Salazar.
Caballero, known for his skillful bass playing, contributed significantly to the group’s rise in the Basque rock scene.
Mikel Caballero’s contributions to Gatibu
At the age of 57, Caballero’s sudden demise leaves a void in the Basque music community. His bass playing played a substantial role in many of Gatibu’s hits, such as “Urepel,” “Euritan dantzan,” “Gabak zerueri begire,” “Musturrek sartunde,” and “Aske maite.”
Despite leaving Gatibu in 2022, Caballero’s legacy lives on through the ten recordings he contributed to during his time with the band.
Following his departure, Ekain Alzola, the son of Fito & Fitipaldis’s saxophonist, took over Caballero’s role in Gatibu. Despite this change, Caballero’s impact on the band’s history remains indelible.
Musical Journey Beyond Gatibu
Apart from his tenure with Gatibu, Mikel Caballero’s musical journey included collaborations in various projects such as Cartoon Band, Maxia, Insert Beat, and Noiz?.
His work extended to supergroups like Seda, where he released an album, and EraBatera, alongside members of Willis Drummond and Ken Zazpi.
At the time of his passing, Caballero was actively involved in the band Peatones, a rock group from Biscay that he co-founded with experienced musicians Felix Landa and Galder Creo.
The trio contributed to the vibrant music scene, leaving an enduring mark on the local rock community.
