The resurgence of Argentina: the book that brings together the ideas of 36 intellectuals for future governments, of whatever sign they are

“Our book is printed. I believe that together we have all achieved a small feat: in 120 days we have convened, developed, coordinated and published a collective work”, he writes. Pedro Luis Barcia in a letter to the 36 co-authors of The resurgence of Argentina. Thoughts and proposals from 36 Argentinian intellectuals (Editorial Teaching, 2023).

That of Barcia is a very generous plural since most of the task of calling, compiling and editing the book fell to this linguist, passionate about our literature and in love with the country. He was the alma mater of this project, which he carried out with great efficiency given that the call to contribute to this work was launched in October 2022 and the book went to print on January 31. .

Whoever writes this has also been asked by Barcia to contribute to this collective work.

The main recipients of the book are “politicians who aspire to govern, for the good of our country, in 2023”, explained Barcia in his call, but also other intellectuals who can feel inspired and stimulated to make their own contribution. and, of course, all Argentines who suffer from this present and look to the future with concern, but also with hope.

“Is a manual -says Barcia-, in the only sense that it is offered to leaders who can find in these pages suggestions, stimuli, ideas that can be channeled into government actions. Ours is a gesture of patriotic assistance.” And, quoting Leopold Lugoneswho asked for “better eyes to see the Fatherland”, adds that “positive points of view are offered here to, from them, improve the Fatherland”.

The book is not addressed to any political force in particular, but to all good Argentines who wish to contribute to the necessary resurgence of Argentina.

“Little, possible and permanent”: in these three “Ps”, the coordinator summarized the characteristics that the contributions had to have, the theme of which was moreover the free choice of each author. “It is not a systematic work, but rather the result of the confluence of various and different efforts towards a goal that magnetizes them: the improvement of the country on as many levels as possible”, specifies Barcia.

In his letter of invitation, the coordinator explained that the idea was born out of a dialogue with his publisher, Eugenio Gomez de Mier, both moved by the deep concern aroused by the spectacle of our decadence.

This spectacle was described by Barcia in a few painful strokes, in this way:The degradation of language, by various means, and the trivialization of pledged speech; the amortization of values ​​and the affirmation of a axiological relativism in all planes; destruction of educational foundations at all levels and school ideological indoctrination; lack of dialog open and frank, the basis of all democracy and all harmonious social life; there false friend/enemy dichotomy; there cancel culture; violation of work culture; the exaltation of ease before the merit of the effort and healthy competition; mediocrity as a way of life; the amortization of the project and the exaltation of blind improvisation; the trivialization of our national symbols and detachment from our national history; the culture of giving which denies personal effort, and a long etcetera”.

On the basis of this austere diagnosis, he invited to collect proposals in a book intended for future legislators and rulers. “Some will be restorations, others intensifications or attenuations and other innovations in the different areas that they cover,” he listed. “Ideally, the proposals contained in this book can become a basics of state policieswhich ensure permanence and durability in its effects,” he added, as a sign of hope.

Finally, in his usual style, he proposes to replace the motto “Do not joke” by the Entre Ríos “Come in, my brother”.

Eugenio Gómez de Mier, for his part, clarified that “this call for experts is not promoted or sponsored by any political party or partisan coalition, nor by any promising or charismatic politician”. His expectation and commitment, he said, was to “make all contributions” available “to the Argentine community in general” and in particular to “all the Argentine men and women who have been honored by the popular mandate to care for and promote the authentic interests of the Argentine community.

De Mier also points out that this national debate “is accessible with the sole title of being a solidary Argentinian: It is enough to carry with enthusiasm in your open hands offering to any other Argentine the heritage gifts that you have obtained thanks to your work and your dedication so that the whole Argentine community is enriched and the bonds that give us identity be strengthened in a lasting embrace. with the beloved Fatherland”.

The task does not stop in this book. As Barcia writes, “beyond the notable network of proposals already formulated (…), an emotional idea beats and ostensibly manifests, a spirit that returns to each of us to transcend us and feel us projected as living members of of a People on the move, of a National Community which aspires and seeks its fulfillment better, raising us, finally, as pious and grateful citizens of a motherland that unites us all and shelters us”.
