In the early hours of February 12, the unfortunate death of protectionone of the dogs that traveled to Turkey as part of the Mexican Army’s rescue team to help search for people after the 7.8 magnitude earthquake that hit that country on 6 FEBRUARY.

The death of the dog was announced by the Secretary of National Defense (Sedena), an institution that issued its conviction for the event, although it did not specify the causes for which Proteo lost his life.

The sensitive news immediately provoked a large number of reactions among social media users, who regretted what happened and expressed their support and appreciation for both Proteo and the dogs that make up the emergency services.

According to information provided by María Antonieta Duarte, Zootechnical Veterinary Doctor (MVZ) graduated from the National Autonomous University of Mexico (UNAM), Proteus naturally fulfilled all the requirements to act as a rescuer due to the nature of his race.

In interview with The universalthe specialist clarified that Proteo was a purebred dog belga priest which is characterized by its agility and intelligence, in addition to its great ability to complete missions during training.

In addition, these dogs are distinguished by their protective, loyal and friendlywhich makes them ideal beings to be part of the rescue canine pairs, as specified by Duarte for the aforementioned environment.

He also specified that the history of Belgian shepherds in relief packages goes back to Middle Agesperiod during which they were also used as loading dogs, while during the world wars they served as messengers.

Because they are naturally protective animals, the MVZ recommended against encouraging such instincts without proper guidance. Additionally, he advised that these dogs should not be considered pets unless they are given the attention, exercise and discipline necessary for their well-being.

In addition to the post and photo shared by Sedena on Twitter, the company released a tribute video for Proteo, which included a moving video of Private Villeda, who allegedly trained the rescue dog.

“I want to tell you that I am proud of you because you have always been a strong dog, a hardworking dog who never gave up. Now I just have to thank you for bringing me (. ..) I will always remember yousaid the military element on camera.

Afterwards, Navy and Red Cross personnel held a ceremony and roll call in honor of the deceased dog. “We are aware of all your efforts and all your sacrifices. We would like to thank you with this brief ceremony for your services (sic.),” a member of the healthcare facility said in a video.

Proteus was one of 10 dogs that traveled to Turkey as part of the Mexican Army’s rescue brigades. The Belgian Shepherd worked his last days with his colleagues Timba, Territorio, Barato, Balanceo, Bureta, Biósfera, Tardio, Kiara and Teología.

The group of Mexican rescuers arrived in the Turkish nation on February 8 at 03:53 a.m. (local time) to begin work in Adiyamanan area assigned to them where the earthquake caused severe damage.
