NEW YORK — The 2022 tax filing deadline is approaching. If you have already presented them, you are surely wondering when the refund will arrive.

According to the IRS, the status of your income tax refund can be checked 24 hours after e-filing. After electronically filing your 2020 and 2021 tax returns, you will have to wait 3-4 days to verify. If you filed a paper return, you will have to wait four weeks before checking its status.

The information is updated once a day, overnight. To check the status of your refund, you will need:

  • Your social security number or tax identification number
  • Your marital status for reporting purposes
  • The exact amount of your refund upon your return

The IRS says you should only call them to request a refund if the “Where’s my refund” section tells you to contact the agency. Click here for IRS phone numbers and tax assistance options.

However, it is important to recognize that your refund may be delayed if your return requires corrections or additional review. Find out why your refund may take longer.

You can use the IRS tool Where is my refund?or in English Where is my refund?which now allows you to track tax refunds going back two years.

To use the tool, you will need your Social Security or ITIN number, your marital status, and the exact amount of your expected refund.

Depending on the form you filed to file your taxes, or if you are filing a joint return, additional information and data may be required for you to see your refund information.

If you have filed your taxes, aside from a possible federal refund, you may have a state refund.
