Several people in Northridge woke up to a tidal wave after a main gust, causing extensive damage to a home and flooding the streets.

A 1964 pipe burst underground just outside a house, flooding several neighborhood streets just before 1 a.m. The rushing water was so powerful that it opened the owners’ garage doors.

“I saw through the window that the water was flooding the street,” said Ricky Rocha, one of the neighbors. “I just went outside to see if everyone was okay and called 911. Luckily everyone outside was safe.”

It took DWP about an hour to shut off the water. They are expected to be working on fixing the broken pipe over the next few hours.
