Although many complain that the Billboard is always full of superhero movies, the truth is that terror has gained a lot of traction in recent years. 2022 was no exception, and brought us several great successes of the genre, such as Smile, the fifth installment of Scream or Nope! In this article, we’ll review the best horror movies of the past year and tell you how to stream them.
Smile
Smile isn’t the genre revolution we were promised, but it’s still a horror movie with good scares and very chilling moments. Its popularity backs it up: Smile managed to rake in over 200 million, becoming the highest-grossing horror film this year, and one of the 50 highest-grossing films in history.
No !
Jordan Peele’s third film after Let Me Out and Us. In Peele’s ranking, we would place Nope! right in the middle, being superior to Us. The film’s story falters a bit, but its tense moments are very well done, giving us some of the most exciting scenes of the year. We all remember the famous chimpanzee sequence.
The passenger
If you like B movies, you can’t miss the Passenger. This road movie tells the story of a group of travelers who pick up a mysterious hitchhiker who is not what she seems. The passenger is a Spanish tribute to 80s horror films, with many references to the work of David Cronenberg. If you are a fan of the famous director, and offal, check it out.
The menu
An original thriller that has two deluxe protagonists. FORnya Taylor-Joy and Ralph Fiennes eat up the screen every time they appear on stage together. In addition, El menú knows how to maintain a tension at all times, and manages to make a great criticism of modern society and certain very fashionable elitist behaviors.
The Texas Chainsaw Massacre
A true horror movie classic that has just been adapted for our times. Director Fede Álvarez, who was also in charge of the Evil Dead reboot. Malnazidos
malnazidos is a movie set in the Spanish Civil War that somehow successfully mixes war movies with zombie movies. The film also avoids the clichés of the two genres quite well, already exploited enough, to end up being a fairly correct dark humor film with good characters.
Wendell and savage
A stop-motion movie Created by one of the greatest experts in the genre: the director of The Nightmare Before Christmas and Coraline. This film tells the story of two malevolent demons who make a deal with a teenage punk fanatic to escape the Underworld and fulfill their dreams in the Land of the Living.
black phone
Black phone is another blockbuster for Blumhouse, a production company that has already become a benchmark for horror films. Black Phone tells the story of a kidnapped boy who is locked in a basement and discovers he can communicate with the man’s victims via an old telephone.
The Curse of the Werewolf
After the glut of superhero series and movies we’ve had this year, Curse of the Werewolf is a breath of fresh air. This Marvel Halloween Special Is Based On Classic Horror Movies and follows a group of monster hunters, who come together to slay a dangerous beast.
My Best Friend’s Exorcism
The Exorcism of My Best Friend is based on the famous novel by Grady Hendrix. That’s exactly what you’d expect from the title. In this story, a high school girl must save her best friend from demonic possession. A film set in the 80s, which mixes horror with small touches of comedy.
Barbaric
One of the surprises of this year. The first part of Barbarian is a masterclass in how to make horror movies. It must also be recognized that, from its second part, the film takes a completely unexpected path. If you’re a fan of the genre and like movies with lots of twists and turns, it’s worth a shot.
Shout
Fifth part of this mythical horror saga which, as usual, parodies all the clichés of the genre, without neglecting the bloody scenes or the murders. Scream is a proposal faithful to the origins of the saga and also serves as a generational relief. A group of new actors are joined by the legendary Neve Campbell, Courteney Cox and David Arquette.
The Orphan: First Murder
The Orphan is a good horror movie. You don’t need to have seen it to enjoy its prequel, but it’s still a can’t-miss movie. First Murder, chronicles the origins of Esther, a grown woman who has the body of a girl because of a strange medical condition. Esther escapes from the psychiatric hospital where she is locked up and passes herself off as a girl to be adopted.
Veneciaphrenia
The latest work by Álex de la Iglesia, a director who has contributed a lot to horror and fantasy films in our country. On this occasion, de la Iglesia introduces us to a murderer obsessed with the idea of ridding Venice of the hordes of tourists who ravage it every day. A very entertaining slasher, although a bit confusing in some sections.
