The Indianapolis Police have confirmed several victims in a shooting that occurred around midnight on Thursday at the facilities of the courier company FedEx near the city’s airport, located in the US state of Indiana.
Several people with gunshot wounds were taken to local hospitals after a shooting at a FedEx office in Indianapolis, according to Agent Genae Cook, a spokeswoman for the Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department.
Police believe the attacker took his own life and that “there is no active threat to the community at this time,” he said.
Local media reported that there is no exact figure on how many people were shot in the warehouse located near the city’s airport, nor what was the extent of their injuries.
According to the spokesperson for the Metropolitan Police Department, the agents have been advised to move to the place, on the Mirabel promenade, at 11:00 p.m. (local time), the local television station WRTV reported.
Sgt. John Perrine, a public information officer for the Indiana State Police, asked relatives of Fedex employees to meet at a local Holiday Inn hotel.
Cook has specified that the agents are at the scene, working and gathering information in a “situation of mass victims.” The authorities have indicated that at the moment they cannot provide more details about the situation, according to CNN.
In a statement, FedEx said it was aware of the “tragic shooting” at the Indianapolis facility.
“Safety is our top priority and our thoughts are with all those affected. We are working to gather more information and we are cooperating with the investigating authorities, ”said company spokesman Jim Masilak in an email to CNN.
For his part, a spokesman for the Indiana State Police, John Perrine, has reported through his Twitter profile of different cuts on roads near the place due to the police operation.
A live video showed a police tape at the scene of the incident, which followed several mass shootings in recent weeks.
Late last month, four people, including a child, were shot and killed in a Southern California office building.
On March 22, 10 people were killed in a shooting at a grocery store in Boulder, Colorado.
