Street gangs and time travel; In a nutshell, that’s what’s going on”Tokyo avengers“, a story that places Hanagaki Takemichi at the center of events, a young man who one day obtains return to the past with a very clear objective: to save the only girl he has ever had as a partner from a horrific staged death. With this concept, are there any other anime that have a similar structure or feature? This is precisely what I come to bring to you today.

Boku dake ga Inai Machi / Erased / Disaparecido

If we’re talking about time travel, of course”Missing” (as it was adapted in Spain) is an anime to remember. In the end, it shares two essential facts with “Tokyo Revengers”: The protagonist returns to the past by taking possession of the body of his little self, and he does so in order to save a girl he knew in the past.. The big difference here is that in “Disappeared” there’s no street gang action, but that doesn’t mean the protagonists won’t face dangers that could well cost them their lives.

Re: zero

Con”Re: zero“We automatically jump into the world of fantasy and isekai, but even here you’ll find things that will catch your eye if you like ‘Tokyo Revengers’. In ‘Re:Zero’, its protagonist (Subaru) has the ability to come back to life upon death. As? Loading a series of “save points” which are set whenever something really relevant happens to it. In this way, in both animes, we find the protagonist constantly traveling to the past to change things that impact an unwanted future.

  • Release date: April 4, 2016.
  • Number of episodes: 25 (Season 1).
  • Where to watch: On Crunchyroll.

Steins;Door

Obviously, if I’m talking about time travel and anime, it’s impossible not to mention”Steins;Door“. As one of the banners of the concept, the story introduces us to Rintarou Okabe, a scientist who, together with his team, is interested in all kinds of scientific explorations, including timelines. Thus, after certain events, we will find that in “Steins;Gate” you should take care of the effect of changes in timelines the same way it happens every time Takemichi travels to the past to “fix” the worst consequences of executed changes.

  • Release date: April 6, 2011 (Season 1).
  • Number of episodes: 24.
  • Where to watch: On Netflix and also AnimeBox.

Click on the link

Another proposal for time travel, in this case quite recent and overflowing with quality despite its ignorance compared to the other names on the list. In “Click on the link“We have two protagonists who offer a particular service: They can enter photographs that transport them to the time they were taken and try to resolve whatever the client’s request is in the process.. Of course, they still have to be very careful about what they do, because the same way Takemichi sees wild changes in the future every time he changes something from the past, the same consequences can happen in “Link Click”.

  • Release date: April 30, 2021.
  • Number of episodes: 11 episodes (Season 1).
  • Where to watch: On Crunchyroll.

Banana Fish

If what you’re really interested in on the list is finding anime with time travel, then “Banana Fish” isn’t for you. If, on the other hand, what interests you is the action that stems from street gangs or criminal organizations, then you face one of the most recommended anime you will find. Thus, in “Banana Fish” we will find the story of the dangerous Ash Lynx, a 17-year-old boy who grew up on the darkest side of society and who one day unexpectedly meets Eiji Okumura, a young budding Japanese photographer who will forever change your view of the world.

Durarara!!

Once again, we get rid of time travel in “Durarara!!” focus more on the issue of street gangs. Notice, even without time travel, “Durarara!!” he’s got his stuff of paranormal stuff, like the presence of a Dullahan. Essentially, this anime exposes various paranormal situations that take place in Tokyo that involve all kinds of street gangs, so there’s no shortage of action moments. Again, if you don’t mind the deadlines being pushed back, “Durarara!!” it is indeed a very unique and highly recommended anime.

  • Release date: January 8, 2010 (Season 1).
  • Number of episodes: 24.
  • Where to see: Currently not available in Spain.
Durarara!!

Rebuild our life!

Unlike the previous two animes, in “Rebuild our life!“The notion of time travel is coming back but one of the actions of street gangs is detached. Thus, in this case we will see that the protagonist returns to his life as a student to try to change his career path, and in the process also ends up altering everything he has created in terms of social and romantic relationships. A much calmer conception of time travel in which the relationships between the characters stand out above all else.

  • Release date: July 3, 2021.
  • Number of episodes: 12.
  • Where to watch: At Crunchryoll.

Orange

Orangeretrieves a key element in the narrative of “Tokyo Revengers”: go back to the past to save someone who is not in the present… but not exactly. What happens in this case is that the protagonist, Naho, receives a letter from herself from the future which warns him of one thing: Kakeru, one of his high school classmates, does not live in his timeline. So, at the request of a remorseful letter from herself, Naho will try to avoid a future that, unlike Takemichi, in her case (or at least in her timeline) is not yet realized.

  • Release date: July 4, 2016.
  • Number of episodes: 13.
  • Where to watch: On Crunchyroll.

Rainbow

In “Rainbow“There’s no time travel or street gangs, so why is this a recommendation if you like ‘Tokyo Revengers’? ‘Rainbow’ shows a group of teenagers who find themselves transferred to a special jail for those who have committed serious crimes… and in which the conditions are inhumane. Set in the year 1955, it offers a very raw vision of Japan after the Second World War, and above all it represents a series of strong bonds between the protagonists which can well be assimilated to the passion of Toman and its members..

  • Release date: April 7, 2010.
  • Number of episodes: 26.
  • Where to see: Currently not available in Spain.

ReLIFE

The anime of “ReLIFE” is the one who again bets on time travel… but not at the same time. While Takemichi in “Tokyo Revengers” mentally switches to another timeline, in “ReLife”, what happens is that its protagonist consumes a special pill developed by an organization that makes his 27-year-old physique look like a 17-year-old teenager. Thus, he now has the opportunity to change his life to leave behind an adult stage that ended in failures and gray moments.

  • Release date: July 2, 2016.
  • Number of episodes: 13 (Season 1).
  • Where to watch: On Crunchyroll.
ReVie

Obviously, there are more chronological anime and street gangs or, in general, similar themes that touch on “Tokyo Revengers” in some way. However, the ones I have collected are the ones I consider to be the best known representatives and in tune with all the keys that the history of Takemichi touches. If anyone has any other suggestions or an anime that they consider essential, feel free to post it in the comment section.
