A 16-year-old teenager died after being shot four times, including one in the head, as he left class yesterday afternoon in East Orange, New Jersey.

According to police sources, the crime occurred around 03:15 p.m. on Lincoln Street near Park Avenue, just steps from three schools as classes were ending, including the Edward T. Bowser School of Excellence. It has not been specified which school the victim was a student.

First responders took the unidentified teen to Newark University Hospital, where he was pronounced dead, ABC News reported. Sources said they are investigating whether the shots came from a passing car or a group walking near the teen. So far no arrests have been announced.

Unreleased surveillance video captured a crowd of schoolchildren walking and then running, fleeing gunfire. “I turned the corner and the next thing I knew I saw the boy lying on the ground with blood,” Mike, a 15-year-old who was there, told CBS2.

He added that friends of the victim were standing around him and crying. “I feel like it’s crazy to see us young black people here, as children, getting shot at.” Traumatized by what he saw, Mike called the police and headed to the police station.
