Authorities are looking for the person who fatally shot a 25-year-old man near a gas station in Fontana.

Detectives this morning said they had leads, but were working to find the shooter.

Fontana police say the shooting happened a few blocks from the popular gas station, but the victim made it to the business, and it was one of the only businesses open in the region.

A neighborhood neighbor said he heard a commotion.

“Without hearing gunshots, you know. We said, ‘what was that?’ and then they went on, a few more times, and then, you know, we heard all the sirens and the police and the helicopters and everything,” said Darío Rodríguez, a neighbor.

It was shortly before midnight on Sunday when Darío Rodríguez said he and his neighbors rushed outside after hearing several gunshots nearby, unaware that someone had been killed.

Fontana Police Department Officer Daniel Romero said a 25-year-old Garden Grove man was shot and killed in his car on South Highland Avenue before parking at the Citrus gas station, where he died.

In the victim’s vehicle, a gray van, a bullet hole is visible in the passenger side window.

Officer Romero said detectives compiled security video to find out what caused the violence.

“Detectives, to date, believe this was not a random attack, they believe the suspect and victim knew each other and are currently working on active leads to locate the suspect,” Romero said.

“I really hope this community comes together and really helps find the shooter,” Rodriguez added.

As of now, it’s unclear how the shooter and the 25-year-old knew each other.

If you have any information on the whereabouts of the shooter, please call the Fontana police.
