Here we inform you that the authorities have imposed $400,000 bail on Nubia Esmeralda Burrier, a woman accused of charging immigration services without having the necessary credentials. Now authorities are looking for other possible victims.
Following news of the indictment by the Los Angeles District Attorney’s Office, we have received multiple calls from people who say they have entrusted their immigration records to Burrier. We have again spoken with the authorities, who insist on the urgency for the people possibly concerned to intervene as soon as possible.
Nubia Esmeralda Burrier faces multiple charges following a lawsuit filed against her by the district attorney on February 9, aided by a bar investigation.
“He had an office, obviously in immigration court, and he had been practicing law for several years, illegally,” said Agustín Hernández, supervising attorney at the California State Bar.
The investigation indicates that Burrier, who is not a lawyer, allegedly stole more than $127,150 from at least 17 victims. Following the news, we received calls from people concerned.
“She told me that she was the lawyer Nubia Burrier and that she was supported by other lawyers,” said Lizette Vásquez, who was seeking help with her immigration case.
Ms. Vasquez says Burrier assured her she had an easy case to win. “She told me, you can apply for asylum, I will help you.”
He insists that, without giving him a contract, he started charging him a fee.
“Nine grand, and he was going to leave me a monthly payment,” Vásquez said.
Years later, he says, he found out that immigration hadn’t received the payments. Now, says Ms. Vásquez, she doesn’t know the status of her case.
“As I haven’t fully recovered my file, I don’t know what she wrote,” he said.
And she’s not alone…
“She had about a thousand records, and people were paying thousands of dollars for services that she said she could provide, but couldn’t,” Hernández said.
It is very important, insisted Hernández, that those affected call to quickly return their original files and documents.
“So they can go find a real lawyer,” he added.
If you hired Burrier, call (213) 765 1747 and remember, before you hire immigration services, consider this:
“An immigration consultant must be registered and have a bond of $100,000 with the California Secretary of State before the service is offered. They must post a sign saying they are not lawyers and provide you with a written contract in English and your native language and give you the right to cancel the contract within 72 hours,” said Maggie Becerra, executive director of the Ministry of Consumer Affairs. Business.
It should be mentioned that Burrier is also not registered as an immigration consultant and, as authorities state, she is not a lawyer. And although several times we have tried to get an interview with her, so far she has not wanted to talk to us.
