An earthquake of magnitude 6.8 rocked eastern Tajikistan on Thursdayreported the United States Geological Survey (USGS).

The movement was felt at 05:37 local time (00:37 GMT) and its epicenter was about 20.5 kilometers deepadded the USGS.

According to initial reports, the epicenter appeared to be at Upper Badakhshana semi-autonomous eastern province bordering Afghanistan and China.

A 5.0 magnitude aftershock was felt in the region about 20 minutes after the initial earthquake.

The sparsely populated territory borders the Pamir mountain range. The USGS predicted that “little or no population” will be exposed to landslides from the earthquake.
