San Bernardino County declared a local state of emergency on Monday following a blizzard that trapped residents of mountainous areas in their homes due to several feet of snow that fell on the weekend and those expected.

The local emergency declaration will allow authorities to get the state and federal assistance they need for mountain road clearing and other necessary services.

“Today’s declaration of emergency is an important step that will elevate the state’s response to this extreme weather event,” said Board of Supervisors Chairwoman Dawn Rowe, whose Third District includes the communities of mountains affected.

“Our team of state and local partners will continue to work around the clock on a coordinated and comprehensive strategy to provide relief and resources to our residents, while prioritizing everyone’s safety.”

County officials and the American Red Cross have set up emergency shelter and resources for mountain residents unable to return home.

The shelter is located at Redlands East Valley High School, located in the 31000 E. Colton Ave., Redlands, CA 92374. The shelter will be staffed 24 hours a day and resources will be available between 8 a.m. and 7 p.m.

It also offers a call center, at 909-387-3911, Monday through Friday, 8 a.m. to 7 p.m. to provide information.

All county agencies are asking non-mountain residents and non-residents to avoid the area as cleanup efforts continue.
