Four officers from the Neighborhood Safety team saw a fight involving a gunman in a crowd. Responding to the incident, officers shot the suspect and he ended up dying after being sent to a hospital.

A police-involved shooting in the Inwood neighborhood of northern Manhattan left one person dead early Sunday, authorities said.

NYPD reported that four Neighborhood Safety team officers were driving an unmarked vehicle around 3:00 a.m. when they saw a fight involving a gunman in a crowd. They later opened fire on a 29-year-old man, whose identity has not been known.

Surveillance video from a nearby business showed people running from gunfire while others hid among parked cars. The intersection of Dyckman Street and Nagle Avenue was littered with shell casings and evidence markers, ABC7 NY reported.

“They give the person orders to drop the firearm, they shout repeated commands and then at some point the officers discharged their weapons,” one officer said.

Cellphone footage showed commotion at the scene and crews trying to resuscitate the injured man before he was rushed to a hospital.

The 29-year-old subject, whose identity has not been released, was pronounced dead shortly after. Police are trying to determine exactly why the dispute started, but believe it is too early to find out what caused the incident in the first place.

Also, another person was grazed by a bullet in the same area where the fatal shooting occurred. She is currently hospitalized.

“I see a lot of shots. It’s like a 30, 39 shot, that’s what I hear, and a lot of police; a lot of people running in the street,” a worker told ABC7 NY.
