NEW YORK – New York City on Monday opened registration for the free summer camp program known as Summer Rising 2023 and those interested have until May 1 to complete the application. The program is available to all students in kindergarten through 8th grade.

The difference this year is that the registration process will no longer be in order of arrival. Instead, families can rank multiple program preferences, ensuring more people can get the opportunity that’s right for them so students can join the program starting around July.

What is Summer Rising about?

Summer Rising 2023 is a partnership between New York City Public Schools and the Department of Youth and Community Development (DYCD). The program is free and available to all New York students in kindergarten through 8th grade, subject to space availability.

What will students learn during summer camp?

The students of summer sunrise they will have access to academic and enrichment programs throughout the day, including field trips, arts activities, and outdoor recreation. Programs will be full-day, in-person, and will be planned and managed collaboratively by principals and community organizations (CBOs). The environment will be safe and supportive with staff ready to meet the social and emotional needs of children. Breakfast, lunch and afternoon tea will be served.

A typical day for K-8 students will include a mix of academic support, social-emotional learning, and enrichment activities. Classes will be taught by licensed teachers in the morning. CBO staff will lead enrichment activities (such as art, sports, and games) in the evenings and on Fridays. CBOs will also facilitate morning enrichment, with academics, for K-5 programs. Students with disabilities who may need additional support to participate in the program, such as a paraprofessional, will receive these supports as needed.

K-8 Multilingual/English Language Learner (ML/ELL) students participating in summer sunrise they will participate in culturally sensitive and student-centered academic opportunities in the mornings and participate in enrichment sessions in the afternoons facilitated by trusted community organizations. Additionally, in the morning, ML/ELLs will receive instruction focused on language and literacy development to support them with grade-level content. English as a New Language (ENL) teachers can support ML/ELLs through a variety of instructional models, including small group instruction or individual support for ML/ELLs.

When does the program start?

Depending on the course, some students will start on July 5 and others on July 6. Most programs end in mid-August. To see the dates go here.

How is the registration process?

This year’s registration procedure:

  • Prioritize students who must attend summer school for academic reasons, students in temporary housing and homestay students, 12-month IEP students, and students with a local connection to the program CBO of the school year or the school community.
  • Provide an application window during which families can take the time to apply; families will not be favored or penalized based on when they apply, as long as it is within this period.
  • Use an application portal, so families can apply from a mobile phone or any internet-connected device in minutes.
  • Allow families to rank multiple options on the application portal, so they are more likely to receive a spot in the summer lineup.
  • Allow families to update/change their enrollment preferences and/or withdraw their application during the enrollment period.

What is the registration window?

Families will classify several program preferences in the application window (from April 17 to May 1) and will then be assigned to a program, depending on the availability of places, using the prioritization described above.

Who is eligible for the summer program?

Any student attending a school in New York, who is currently in grade K-8 (during the 2022-2023 school year), is eligible for Summer climb. Charter students, non-public school students, and home school students in New York are also eligible.

How can I complete the registration?

As of April 17, the link to the application portal can be found on this webpage. The application window will close on May 1.

During this time, Parent Liaison Officers will be available to assist families with their application, especially families who may not have internet access. Families can also contact their school, CBOs Summer Rising, or the summer inbox ([email protected]) with any questions.

Approximately one week after the application window closes, families will receive an email confirming their placement in a program summer sunrisedepending on the availability of places.

How does transportation to program locations work?

New York City Public Schools and DYCD are committed to ensuring students have a safe path to and from summer sunrise. This summer, eligible students will receive daily transportation from July 5 to August 11, arriving at their program around 8 a.m. and leaving their program no later than 3 p.m. (Students enrolled in the D75 and ESY schedules will receive transportation for the duration of their IEP program: July 5 to August 14 for ESY and July 6 to August 15 for D75.) Students who meet the criteria must s Register for the summer program by May 19 to receive a bus itinerary in time for July 5.
