Lewis Hamiltonfive; george russell, seventh. This was Mercedes’ result in the first race of the Formula 1 season. Far from fighting for victory as was the custom not so long ago. And that worries a lot in the team.

Toto Wolff, leader of the Silver Arrows, has admitted that they got absolutely everything wrong when designing the W14. They therefore announce a radical change for the next races. Australia will be the next meeting.

Speaking to ‘Sky Sports’, he announced “radical changes”: “You have to take one step after another to recover. But it has to be much more radical steps than a three-tenths improvement”.

“We were wrong, we thought we could turn things around by sticking to this concept car, but it didn’t work. We need to change our approach to figuring out where the right direction is and what we’re missing,” says -he.

He hopes they can make it happen: “We can, of course we can.” And seven are very jealous of what Red Bull is doing, with Max Verstappen and Sergio Pérez in another league: “That’s what hurts, because they are far ahead. It reminds me of our best years, when we easily put a second behind all our rivals.”

Wolff acknowledged that it had been one of the worst Sundays he remembered in the competition: “The truth is, it didn’t go well at all. We lacked rhythm everywhere…”.

Neither Hamilton nor Russell could fight on the track. Russell fell behind the Aston Martin of Spear Strolldespite his wrist injury which caused him “excruciating pain” throughout the race in his arms.
