A move to rename the 12-acre space in downtown Los Angeles to “Gloria Molina Grand Park” was approved by the Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors on Tuesday.

Supervisor Gloria Molina was the first Chicana in history to be elected to the California State Legislature, Los Angeles City Council and Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors, where she served for 23 years .

During his tenure on the Board of Supervisors, one of his greatest accomplishments was championing and bringing to life Grand Park, which is located in the heart of downtown Los Angeles, stretching from the Music Center to the Los Angeles City Hall. a space for Angelenos with free public programming throughout the year,” the motion reads.

“His vision to create this public park in downtown Los Angeles came to fruition in 2012 through a collaborative effort between Los Angeles County, the City of Los Angeles and related companies, which helped fund the project”, according to the movement.

Molina grew up in the town of Pico Rivera and is one of 10 children born to a Mexican-American father and a Mexican mother. He attended Rio Hondo and East Los Angeles High Schools, as well as California State University, Los Angeles.

She served in President Jimmy Carter’s administration as vice president on staff, also served as a member of the state assembly from 1982 to 1987, then was elected to District 1 of the Los City Council. Los Angeles in 1991.

Supervisor Hilda Solis is the one who moved the motion to recognize Molina’s career in the city of Los Angeles.

Last week, former Los Angeles County Supervisor Gloria Molina announced that she had terminal cancer.

Molina, 74, said in a Facebook post who has been in treatment for three years and describes the cancer as very aggressive. The former supervisor began her message with “dear friends and dear community”.
