NEW JERSEY — With Tax Day just weeks away, New Jerseyans still have time to use local resources like Newark’s free tax preparation program.

The program Free Tax Prep in Newark is an initiative of the Newark Asset Building Coalition and United Way of Greater Newark that provides free tax preparation services through the Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) program, sponsored by the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) .

All of their tax preparers are certified by the IRS and meet the highest standards of confidentiality, quality, and customer service. The company only uses your tax information in the preparation of your tax return and undergoes a quality review before the client agrees to file it.

Free tax preparation is available through Newark Free Tax Prep for individuals with taxable income of $75,000 or less on their tax return. Please note that income levels vary slightly by location. Those interested in the service should check the details on their website.

Newark Free Tax Prep has been instrumental in helping Newark working families take advantage of all the tax credits they are eligible for, including the Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC), the child tax (CTC) and education tax credits.

Services are available 6 days a week for the remainder of tax season and will close on Saturday, April 15. It is recommended to make an appointment as soon as possible.

For in-person assistance, visit one of Newark Free Tax Prep’s seven in-person locations in the greater Newark area.

For online support, documents can be uploaded online to your secure portal here for virtual support with local digitally certified agents and/or via phone consultation.
