The authorities of Florida (USA) approved a measure that prohibits minors from receiving hormones or gender-affirming treatments, a vote in line with the opposition to these therapies expressed by the state governor, Republican Ron DeSantis.

Members of the Florida Medical Board and the state Board of Osteopathic Medicine approved in a joint session on Friday a proposal that ends gender-affirming therapies and surgical procedures to treat so-called gender dysphoria in those under 18. years.

“The new rule will protect our children from irreversible surgeries and highly experimental treatments,” Florida Surgeon General Joseph Ladapo said in a statement, following the boards’ vote that puts this state on par with other conservative-leaning states with similar bans, such as Arkansas, Oklahoma and Alabama.

The measure began to be discussed in August, amid the rejection of some health professionals, researchers and young people who had undergone these therapies. Ladapo highlighted in his note “the integrity” of the boards to move forward amid “tremendous pressure” this measure that addresses “these unproven and risky treatments.”

“Children deserve to learn to navigate this world without harmful pressures and Florida will continue to fight for children to be children,” he added.

The matter was addressed by the Floridian boards at the request of Governor DeSantis, who could be re-elected for another term next Tuesday, when midterm elections are held, according to what the voting intention polls say.

The Republican has criticized these treatments at various appearances and campaign rallies in recent months, in what has been seen as part of a “culture war” against liberal ideologies.

Last year, DeSantis signed a law that prohibits transgender youth and women from taking part in school sports competitions in female categories.
