NEW YORK — First, the moral of the story: Stay away from storm drains, which can be long and full of things you’d definitely prefer not to touch.

A handful of Staten Island children learned that lesson, among other things, most likely the hard way on Tuesday when they entered a culvert and were swept away by the storm sewer that runs under West Brighton’s Clove Lakes Park, authorities said.

Police said five boys, aged 11 and 12, jumped into the sewers and got lost. They called 9-1-1 around 6 p.m., according to the NYPD.

Emergency personnel responded and found them near the Staten Island Zoo, which is more than half a mile from the park’s picnic area, according to Google Maps.

The children and a firefighter have been taken to hospital for assessment as a precaution, but all are expected to be fine.
