NEW JERSEY – A burst water main in Hoboken has caused the closure of municipal buildings and local schools and the cancellation of recreation programs.

According to utility company Veolia Water NJ, contractors working on an unrelated project reportedly hit a large pipe at Observer and Madison streets, affecting water pressure throughout the city.

In a statement, the city said the water main break resulted in “low water pressure and no water pressure in some municipal buildings…all municipal buildings are closed.”

The Hoboken School District also issued an early release on Monday due to the rift.

Repair crews had been on site since midday Monday to repair the break and restore water pressure.

According to the utility, Veolia Water NJ, crews are trying to repair a 16-inch water main that was apparently ruptured by contractors working in the area.

Although the water pressure has been affected, there is no boil water advisory.

“Although water pressure is low or non-existent in some areas, Veolia has let the city know that the water is safe to drink,” the city said.

Traffic restrictions remain in effect until the violation is rectified.
