An abandoned newborn baby found in a trash can in a Fullerton gas station restroom on Thursday has been hospitalized in critical but stable condition.

Fullerton Police Department officers responded around 3:30 p.m. to the station on the 900 block of Orangethorpe Avenue near Euclid Street regarding a possible newborn left in a bathroom, Sgt. Ryan O’Neill.

After finding the baby, officers began taking action to save the baby’s life and called Fullerton Fire Department paramedics, who took the baby to hospital.

Under the state’s Safe Surrender of Babies Act, a parent or legal guardian can deliver a baby safely, confidentially, and without fear of lawsuit, within 72 hours of birth. The law requires that the baby be taken to a public or private hospital, designated fire station or other safe deposit locations designated by the county board of supervisors.

Detectives investigate who and how the baby was abandoned.

Anyone with information about the abandoned baby is asked to call Detective Marcus Saenz at 714-738-5361. Anonymous calls can be made to Orange County Crime Stoppers at 855-TIP-OCCS or sent to occrimestoppers.org.
