The driver of a tractor-trailer truck lost control of the vehicle, which began to roll over and hit a car, before traveling down the center median into the northbound lanes of I-95, according to the Georgia Department of Public Safety.

He was then struck by two more cars and another tractor-trailer before “reaching final rest,” according to a Georgia State Patrol news release.

Two passengers in the tractor-trailer that caused the crash died at the scene of their injuries, according to the statement. Two other passengers in one of the cars that collided with the tractor-trailer as it entered northbound traffic also died of their injuries after being transported to a hospital.

The tractor-trailer driver was transported to the same hospital and “is suspected of being under the influence of alcohol,” GSP said.

The charges will be handled by GSP when the investigation is complete, according to the statement.

All northbound and southbound I-95 lanes have since reopened after an hour-long closure caused by the crash, according to the Georgia Department of Transportation.
