With support for the Avengers game coming to an end soon, a former creative director at one of Marvel’s Avengers support studios has addressed the impending superhero game shutdown with a brief but moving apology. The live service title failed to meet publisher Square Enix’s expectations, so throughout this year it will slowly lose support.

Marvel’s Avengers was co-developed by Virtuos, and one of the team members spoke about what happened to the game and apologized to players for the unfavorable outcome. Co-Creative Director Cezar Virtosu is now at Hexworks developing The Lords of the Fallen, but he’s also worked on Marvel’s Avengers bosses and enemies.

“Let’s just say it was a tough production,” says Virtosu. “I apologize for that.”

This follows news that Marvel’s Avengers will be shut down by Crystal Dynamics and Square Enix later this year after taking an incredibly high Steam discount as well as news of the shutdown.

This apology from Virtosu is part of a larger interview with Edge Magazine (via GamesRadar), but unfortunately it won’t delay the game’s shutdown, which will happen next month.

  • March 31, 2023 – All credits will be converted to in-game resources, no new content, all cosmetics available for free
  • September 30, 2023 – All support for Marvel’s Avengers will end, but single-player and multiplayer will still be available

The reception to Marvel’s Avengers was very mixed from the start. Square Enix has opted for live service play with a steady stream of free updates backed by cosmetics and coins, but the impact this has had on the main gameplay loop seems to have weighed down the overall experience.

I maintain that the single-player elements of the Avengers game are pretty good, though some live-service mechanics are slipping. If you can find it cheap or play it through a PC Game Pass subscription, I recommend you at least give it a try, especially after March 31 when all cosmetics become free.
