The chicken is a valuable farm animal that Nordic adventurers should consider taming for their base camp. This non-hostile creature is an excellent source of feathers and chicken meat in Valheim. Feathers are primarily used to craft arrows and bolts for ranged combat, and chicken meat is an ingredient in the delicious Honey Glazed Chicken recipe. Remember that chicken meat can only be excreted by hens killed with a cleaver, the tool used to slaughter domestic animals. You can unlock chickens for your house by buying eggs from Haldor, the dwarf merchant in the Black Forest.

Once you hatch an egg in Valheim, you can wait two days for your juvenile chick to hatch into a hen. If you want your hens to lay more eggs to multiply your feathered flock, you must have two well-fed hens that stay close together. Feeding a chicken in Valheim requires understanding what the birds eat: carrot seeds, onion seeds, turnip seeds, beech seeds, birch seeds, dandelions and barley stalks. Place one of these seven resources near two chickens to feed them, after which an egg should appear shortly.

If you’re curious about how to get chickens in Valheim, we mentioned earlier that chickens hatch from eggs purchased from Haldor. However, if you have ever visited Haldor, you may have noticed that there are no eggs in your stash. The reason for this is that eggs are only available after defeating Yagluth, the plains boss. You can summon this legless skeletal giant to your altar using Fuling Totems collected from Fuling Villages and Fuling Berserkers. Once Yagluth is killed, Haldor will have eggs for sale for 1500 coins each. You need to buy two to start a chicken farm. To incubate an egg, place it in a safe place near a heat source for 30 minutes.
