In the future we could see fewer large AAA games from Ubisoft, but more mobile games and Free2Play titles. This emerges from a financial call between the company and investors.

Ubisoft wants to position itself more broadly

“We’ve been saying for a few years that our normal template is either three or four AAA games, so we’re sticking to that plan for fiscal 2022,” said CFO Frederick Duguet. “But we see that we are gradually and continuously moving from a model that used to be only focused on AAA releases to one where we have a combination of strong AAA releases and strong back catalog dynamics, but also complement our program of new releases with Free2Play and other premium experiences.”

At least Far Cry 6, Rainbow Six Quarantine, Skull & Bones, Riders Republic and the remake of Prince of Persia: Sands of Time are planned for big titles. “In fiscal 2022, we will continue our evolution from an AAA release-centric model to one where AAA stands alongside new premium and free-to-play innovative experiences across all platforms,” said Duguet. “These different experiences will be mutually beneficial through complementary gameplay and business models.”

CEO Yves Guillemot added: “We are still on the path that our sales are increasingly attributable to the growing audience. Therefore, we expect that our highly profitable back catalog will make up an even larger part of our business in the future.” Back catalog means the titles that are already available and that have a large player base, including Rainbow Six: Siege.
