A helpful Valheim building tweak looks set to make it easier than ever to build the house, dock, bridge, or whatever build you want. A leading developer of survival game Viking shares a preview of the new manual tuning tool he’s testing, asking fans if it’s something they’d like to see added in a future Valheim update.

Iron Gate lead developer Jonathan Smårs shares a video of the new handcrafted piece on Twitter. He says the feature is designed “to solve the age-old problem of building supports for floors etc.” The 50-second clip previews the feature in action, with various settings the player can switch between to alter how building pieces behave when placed near pre-existing structures and components.

This change seems like a huge quality of life improvement to quickly manage your Valheim builds. Simply put, instead of pieces automatically snapping to nearby objects in the world and jumping somewhat awkwardly between possible snapping points, you can toggle between possible snapping options. As a simple example, when attaching a long piece of wood to a deck, you can switch which end has priority, which means you can easily decide if you want it to go up or let it be fixed at the bottom for support.

The tool seems to adapt dynamically depending on the part you’re using, so stone bricks, for example, have eight different connection points you can switch between. This should make it easier to quickly place objects exactly where you want them. Plus, it’s a huge advantage when building around or on water, as you can easily place objects under your current structure without actually going under it.

Smars Explain that the current implementation simply moves the center of rotation from an object’s middle to its corners (or endpoints), locking the snap to that point. Adds that by holding Shift, players can place it from the currently selected focus point without snapping enabled. It doesn’t confirm if or when the feature will come to Valheim, but it seems quite likely, based on the community’s enthusiastic response, that we can expect it to eventually arrive in a future update.
