Realism in Games: Epic creates Characters that look like the Real Thing

The character models of the MetaHuman Creator look extremely realistic

Nowadays we praise character editors like those from Skyrim, Nioh 2 or Cyberpunk 2077 for their scope. With MetaHumans, however, the Epic Games studio wants to go a big step further.

The project should not only make the characters look much more realistic, but also make their creation much easier.

The developer is quite ambitious. With the program, it should be possible within a few minutes to create virtual counterparts of real people who can hardly be distinguished from the original.

How does the editor work? Instead of editing the characters using bars, their details are adjusted using points directly on the face. So you can change every detail down to the teeth. The virtual faces look very similar to their real counterparts.

What is the technology behind it?

In order to achieve a high level of realism, the MetaHuman Creator uses data from the cloud. The characters created with the MetaHuman Creator can also be easily transferred to Unreal Engine 4 and Unreal Engine 5.

The presentation of the UE5 was already impressive with its realistic graphics.

Unreal Engine 5 - Everything about release, demo, Nanite, Lumen, PC & games

When we will see the first projects with this new technology is still unknown. The first game with the Unreal Engine 5 should be Fortnite in 2021. Its graphic style largely rules out the use of MetaHumans.

This is followed by ArchAge 2, Deamhouse: The Game and Senua’s Saga: Hellblade 2. So far, none of these three games have a release date.
