A new auto-battling game is entering the Web3 space as BattleFly opens early access. This passive butterfly-themed auto battleship customization is open to anyone with a BattleFly NFT and MAGIC tokens.

BattleFly Early Access is now open, although membership is not free. Players must own at least one BattleFly NFT to play. These can be purchased with MAGIC tokens, and the current minimum price is around 25 USD. Players will also need MAGIC tokens. They need 5 MAGIC to bet with their BattleFly, then additional MAGIC tokens for the battle (0.1 per battle). You’ll probably also want mods, which will also cost MAGIC.

To join the Early Access phase, interested players should join the BattleFly Discord and follow the onboarding process in the #welcome channel. It’s a fairly simple process that involves watching a few videos about the game and getting started, then answering a few questions.

What is BattleFly?

BattleFly is a play-to-win auto battle game running on the Arbitrum Network, a layer 2 solution for Ethereum. Players stake their BattleFly NFT, set how many battles they want to fight per day, sit down, and hopefully earn some passive wins.

To play, players must wager their BattleFly NFTs along with 5 MAGIC tokens. Players then choose how many battles they want to fight per day with each BattleFly, up to 100 battles per day. Each battle costs an entry fee of 0.1 MAGIC. The winner receives 0.095 of the loser’s MAGIC, with the rest going to BattleFly DAO. The loser receives Nectar. Nectar is used to purchase additional mods for your ship and can also be used to replay search results.

Despite the passive gameplay, BattleFly offers plenty of customization options with mods that can be installed on BattleFlies. A BattleFly’s rarity affects its combat ability, but the main part of the game involves the charges. Each BattleFly can carry up to four mods: two weapons, one defense, and one utility item. Players can purchase additional slots with $gFLY tokens.

Players buy mods through a “collection system”. There are a number of options that allow players to focus on finding specific types of mods. BattleFlies can also equip decals, increasing the chances of finding rare mods when searching. Collecting costs MAGIC tokens.

BattleFly also joins the multimedia frenzy by also offering a comic. Mint for Issue #1 is free for BattleFly owners and available until February 22 at 12:00 CST. you can knock in

BattleFly features player leagues, which automatically advance players as they reach the top of the leaderboards. BattleFly also features a nice stats page, with details on win rates and earnings for each ship. Also, they’ve been on top of bug fixes, releasing several fixes this month.

Thoughts on BattleFly

If BattleFly had come out a year or two ago, I think it would have been awesome. But, given the current and growing Web3 gaming scene, I wonder what market is left for this type of passive gaming.

To be transparent, I didn’t really play because I didn’t want to invest. And while it’s certainly understandable not to offer a free-to-play option, that puts BattleFly squarely in the play-to-win category. Which means that, for the most part, players will expect to win. But of course not everyone can, and when players get tired of losing money and quit, will there be new players to take their place?

But, as it stands, BattleFly has already attracted enough players to wager over 1,700 BattleFlies. So maybe they’ll find a way to make it work!
