A new spin-off game tied to Persona 5 is on the way, but it will only be released in China for smartphone users.

As spotted by Persona Central(Opens in a new tab), Atlus and Sega have announced Persona 5: The Phantom X, a new collaboration with developer Perfect World. It’s a brand new game exclusively for phones and, at least for now, it’s only slated for release in China.

The original Persona 5 cast will appear in The Phantom X, but there’s also a new cast of characters making their debut. The protagonist, who is codenamed Wonder, is in his second year at Kiba Academy when his Persona is awakened, much like main protagonist Ren.

They join Cattle, a strange owl-like creature, Kiba Academy student Arai Suwa, and a new Velvet Room assistant named Merope. Persona character designer Shigenori Soejima has returned to lead the development of this new cast of characters, so the designs will feel familiar and welcome to Persona veterans.

The Phantom X seems to have all the core elements of Persona 5. There’s exploration of Tokyo areas like Shibuya, turn-based combat, finding spooky palaces, real-world evil adults who need to be purged of their evil desires, and downtime. with your friends with activities like fishing and dining.

Honestly, The Phantom X looks really intriguing, which makes its limited release in China all the more painful. It’s going to be a tough pill for Persona fans in general to swallow if the game doesn’t come to the West. For now, we’ll have to keep hoping that Atlus and Sega see enough demand overseas to release The Phantom X elsewhere.

It seems to be the first of Atlus plans “several” revelations for this year, fans are surely hoping Persona 6 is on the cards somewhere.
