Outriders is the surprise success of the year 2021 so far.

It is a big surprise that Outriders, with around 60,000 players who are active at the same time, has gotten to the top of the Steam charts.

Because actually the loot shooter from People Can Fly (Painkiller, Bulletstorm) doesn’t do anything outstandingly well:

  • For a shooter, Outriders offers a surprisingly limited weapon selection.
  • The gameplay is fun, but relatively uniform, and surprises are rare.
  • The cover system is hooked and light years away from the flow of the game in a Gears of War.
  • Classic action role-playing games like Diablo 3 and Path of Exile offer more diverse loot.
  • Character development doesn’t unfold as many facets as in Path of Exile.
  • Mission recycling in the endgame is no comparison to Destiny 2 or Path of Exile.
  • Although it is not a service game according to the developers, there is no offline mode.

As you can see, outriders can be criticized very easily, as our rating table shows. Nevertheless, it is played a lot – not only out there, but also in the GlobeLiveMedia editorial office.

Brent Dubin discusses the reason for this in the GlobeLiveMedia podcast with our Outriders testers Robin Schulz and Meiko Klinge.

Meiko also played Outriders himself and was quite surprised: After he put the loot shooter 2020 on the list of problem children with Fritz, he actually enjoys it.

The crucial question is: Will Outriders disappear again after the opening success or will it stay with us longer?
