It’s no secret that Mainframe Industries has been cooking something special in the background, but we’ve finally gotten to Pax Dei, the developer’s upcoming Steam MMORPG.

Set in the medieval Dark Ages where magic and wonder are free, Pax Dei (God’s Peace) is a world very different from ours and yet so familiar.

“With Pax Dei, we invite players into a dark age of wonder, where myths are real, ghosts exist, and magic is unquestioned,” said Reynir Hardarson, game director and co-founder of Mainframe. “The Pax Dei was
designed for open-world gameplay in the truest sense, and we can’t wait to see how players engage with our world and see their stories emerge.”

Sounds good so far, doesn’t it? ghosts? Check. Magic? Check. This is just the beginning, as the game promises to “build cooperative villages”, which will allow players to safely settle in the Heartlands and expand their settlements with friends. Player accommodation, consult.

But what’s an MMO without good PvE and PvP content? Head out of the Heartlands into the desert and Mainframe promises that all sorts of mythological beasts await you, specifically mentioning basilisks. The trailer below also shows what appear to be some particularly hungry and angry bears, so there are some too.

At the center of Pax Dei is cooperation. A section on the official site explains that “everyone matters” and that the game’s economy is “entirely player-driven”. Even the trailer (titled “Where We Belong”) emphasizes teamwork and camaraderie, and I love it.

like someone who played a lot World of Warcraft, New World and other MMOs, I keep coming back to Final Fantasy XIV because of the quality of the community. If Pax Dei stays true to its values and pushes its cast in the right direction, I think Mainframe has a winner on its hands.

You can list Pax Dei on Steam, and even sign up for the Alpha test via the official site if you feel interested.

Meanwhile, another MMORPG on Steam called Gloria Victis has exploded in recent months, letting you scratch that medieval gaming itch in the meantime. Failing that, we have a list of the best fantasy games, which are the perfect way to promote yourself for Pax Dei.
