Lootbox Lyfe is ruled by the evil “Shadowleaf Irvine”. It is a strange being who introduced the Lootboxes to the Xoobotls, a kind of round creatures that can be found in the world of Lootbox Lyfe. Over time, the Xoobotls stopped spending money on life’s essentials, like food and water. It was not long after that the bodies started falling. Is there a way to restore the species to its former glory? Or is this world in ruins forever because of Shadowleaf’s monopolistic effort?
The player will assume the role of Liam Cappello, the last existing Xoobotl, a kind of round creatures that live in the world of Lootbox Lyfe. Waking up from a long sleep to find that the world you once lived in is in shambles. The culprits of this calamity are the Lootboxes.
Starting out with no powers, you will gradually earn more by opening loot boxes. Liam doesn’t even start with the ability to move, so you even have to get a loot box for that!
The fundamental objective is to save your kind by diving into interconnected global puzzles while overcoming obstacles and unlocking new areas as you gain new movement options.
The world of Lootbox Lyfe+ is huge like any Metroidvania, but one key difference that sets it apart is that it has no individual enemies. The world is your enemy, you have to dodge the peaks, the platforms above the rivers and avoid the traps to go far in the game. At any time you will unlock many skills, such as running, kicking, becoming a loot and more, and you’ll have to use these tools all the time.
As you progress, the platforms naturally become more difficult. However, you unlock new abilities by finding loot boxes, allowing you to approach challenges in different ways. If you get stuck, you can even buy clues with coins you get from exploring that direct you to the nearest loot box with a move ability. You can also find loot boxes with fast travel functionality all over the world to make returning easier!
Lootbox Lyfe+ comes with a lot of cool features, along with the lack of enemies, which lets you approach platforming challenges in a calculated way and encourages you to try lots of move skill combinations. There are movement skills: as you unlock movement skills, you will be able to move around the world more and more easily. This makes it easier to reverse and you can feel like a true speed demon as you apply your learned skills to the built-in fast racing mode. Open Exploration: Beyond the starting area, there is no path to follow in Lootbox Lyfe – you can tackle different areas in different orders.
