CCP, the company behind Eve Online, the most successful space MMO in gaming history, has announced plans to expand into blockchain with a new offering in the Eve universe.

CCP Games has announced that it has secured $40 million in funding to develop a new game title that uses blockchain technology and is set in the Eve universe. The production of the new title, called Project Awakening, is independent of Eve Online. And while Project Awakening will take place in Eve’s universe, there’s no guarantee it will have a direct connection. Or even necessarily be something like Eve Online. Eve Online presents an ever-changing landscape of property control and asset destruction, none of which would work so well if you tried to turn all in-game items into NFTs that exist outside of the game.

However, many ships in Eve Online have real value for players. Therefore, valuing in-game items and buying and selling on third-party marketplaces is not a completely new concept for their player base.

Web2 Developers Embrace Blockchain

This is a remarkable announcement from a well-known game developer. Eve Online has been around for 20 years (hard to believe!) and the name is familiar to many gamers, even if they’ve never played it. The increased adoption of blockchain technology by major gaming companies is bringing greater perceived legitimacy to the web3 gaming space.

But they will have competition. Several other space-based web3 games are already in development. This includes Influence, Star Atlas, Echoes of Empire, and Farsite, to name a few. Most of these games are already in alpha or beta testing, or even in preparation for an official release!

Will CCP be able to create something that features engaging gameplay and doesn’t upset its current fanbase? We will have to see. Eve Online has legions of dedicated fans. But are these players ready to venture into a new game that includes the dreaded NFTs? Will Project Awakening work to include an onboarding system without a wallet? And will they be integrated with existing infrastructure like Immutable X, or will they try to go it alone?

Unfortunately, there is not much information about the game yet. They couldn’t even give us an interesting banner image! So all the assumptions we make now are just guesses. Hopefully CCP will start leaking details about this new game. In the meantime, you can sign up to receive email updates at

What are CCP Games and Eve Online?

Founded in 1917, CCP Games is an Icelandic company famous for developing and launching Eve Online. Eve Online is a free-to-play, persistent, space-based MMO that lets players control and self-manage sections of the galaxy. Players collect, transfer and trade resources, build ships and fight with other players.

With hackers, political manipulations, alliances, betrayals and all kinds of drama, Eve Online is, in a way, a microcosm of world government. Even after 20 years, CCP is still working to grow and add to Eve Online.

Additionally, CCP is working on creating several games set in the same universe as Eve Online. These include Project M5, a 4x strategy game, CCP London an FPS, and the recently announced Project Awakening, a blockchain enabled game.
