Unfortunately, there is a lot of negativity and even potential crime in online multiplayer games. The anonymity of the Internet makes it easy for some to intimidate others, or worse, to make the gaming experience anything but fun.
Apparently, that’s where this group of police are trying to intervene. In Denmark, a group of police officers have been given the responsibility of playing online to search for evidence of a crime under the name of Online Police Patrol.
Cops play popular online games like Fortnite, Minecraft and Call of Duty: Warzone, looking for signs of hate speech, fraud and even solicitation. The effort began in April 2022 and has continued ever since.
The police even have custom avatars in some games to indicate they’re cops, and they regularly stream on Twitch and share behind-the-scenes videos and some of their games earn on video streaming services like Tik Tok.
Although this initiative may seem silly to some players, the truth is that there are problems around online games and their transmission. Toxicity in games has been studied and reported many times, and players of certain titles regularly experience hate speech and harassment.
This sometimes extended to SWAT raids as well, which in some cases had deadly results. Unfortunately, there has been no definitive solution to these problems.
