Over the past 8 seasons, Diablo 3 has introduced dozens of new gameplay mechanics, crafting materials, and consumables. One of those additions was the petrified cry. A terrifying memory of a screaming man, the petrified scream has more uses than you might think. In Season 28, here’s a guide on how the Petrified Scream can benefit you.

What is a petrified cry in Diablo 3?

In Season 26, the developers of Diablo 3 added Petrified Scream as a new consumable to lead players towards a new challenge: Echoing Nightmare. If you put your petrified cry on your Kanai cube, you can transmute it. This will cause a nearby portal to open which will take you to Echoing Nightmare Mode. The Echoing Nightmare is a raid-style challenge, where you fight waves of increasingly difficult enemies, elites, and bosses. The more you beat, the more rewards you’ll get, like the Whisper of Atonement gem.

When it comes to lore, however, Petrified Scream is far less fun. Supposedly, this artifact captures the cry of the grieving Nephalem who mourn the downfall of their society. Brutal.

Like many major objects, the Guardians of the Great Rift let out petrified cries. Therefore, you will need to beat some Nephalem Rifts at a high level to get Greater Rift Keys and open Greater Rifts. However, beating Guardians of the Great Rift does not grant you a guaranteed drop. So sometimes you will have to farm Great Rift Guardians for a while before you get a petrified cry. So be smart about it. Only mine Great Rift levels that you know you can clear quickly.

What are petrified screams for in Diablo 3 season 28?

When it comes to your Season 28 objectives, specifically the Altar of Rites, Petrified Screams are useful for many reasons. The consumable alone can help you unlock one of your seals, as it is the fourteenth sacrifice required for your altar. However, a petrified cry is also needed to unlock other seals. After all, you also need a level 125 Whisper of Atonement, something you can only achieve by defeating a noticeable number of enemy waves in the Echoing Nightmare challenge mode.

Getting a level 125 Whisper of Atonement isn’t the hardest Seal unlock in Season 28 (that honor is getting 340 Primordial Ash), but it’s pretty close.
