The possibility of exchanging weapons in Diablo IV is not as obvious as it might seem at first glance. Many action RPGs will allow players to swap weapons at the touch of a button and move seamlessly between different types of attacks. Diablo IV changed up this classic style of weapon swapping with a completely unique mechanic. Weapon switching is an essential skill in Diablo, as different weapons will deal different types of damage to enemies. This guide will tell you how to change weapons in Diablo IV.

How Weapon Switching Works in Diablo IV

While weapon swapping during combat is different in Diablo IV than it is in standard action RPGs, you can, of course, visit your inventory screen and swap weapons the old-fashioned way. Each class has a different variety of weapons they can use, and if a weapon is locked, it cannot be used by your current class. The weapon swapping system outside of that is different but straightforward once you learn its nuances.

Consider the Barbarian a great example of how weapon switching works in Diablo IV. Different Barbarian abilities will deal different types of damage, such as hitting or bleeding. These abilities can only be used by weapons that match the damage type. In your inventory, weapons will be placed in slots that correspond to them. The Barbarian can use two-handed blunt weapons, two-handed weapons, and one two-handed edged weapon.

If a Barbarian uses an ability like Rend, which deals slashing damage, your character will automatically use the best currently equipped slashing weapon. They will automatically use their two-handed blunt weapon if you use a move like Bash. Each class works the same and is very different from the standard weapon swap in other games, but becomes perfect once you learn how it works in Diablo IV.
