FromSoftware, developer of Elden Ring and super-hardcore RPGs like Dark Souls, Bloodborne, and Sekiro, apparently has a mysterious, unannounced new project in the works, unrelated to Armored Core 6 or the upcoming Elden Ring DLC, and when. release for Shadow of the Erdtree.
Kenneth Chan is a producer and director at FromSoftware and has been with the company for almost ten years. As lead game designer on Elden Ring and co-director of the upcoming Armored Core 6, on his LinkedIn page, Chan lists a mysterious “unannounced project” currently underway at the Dark Souls developer.
This project has apparently been in development since January 2022, with Chan serving as producer. Armored Core 6 will be released in 2023, with Elden Ring’s Shadow of the Erdtree DLC, announced the following February. In terms of a new, unannounced FromSoftware project, this could take a variety of forms.
In June 2022, the studio announced that it was recruiting staff for “several new projects”. PC gamers have also been waiting a long time for a port of 2015’s dark RPG Bloodborne – with other old PlayStation exclusives like God of War, Returnal, Uncharted and The Last of Us coming to PC, there’s a chance Bloodborne will get a portage in the future too.
It’s also possible that the “unannounced project” referenced here is Shadow of the Erdtree, and Chan’s LinkedIn page hasn’t been updated since it was revealed. However, in the base version of Elden Ring, Chan is credited as game designer and project lead, while in the unannounced project, he is credited as producer. Perhaps this change in titles also reflects a brand new game or project.
As for what’s next for FromSoftware, Elden Ring 2 or perhaps Dark Souls 4 would be the most exciting. However, it seems doubtful that an Elden Ring sequel started development in January 2022, even before the first game was released. So King’s Field 5, anyone?
