eerie classic camera obscura, Fatal Frame IV: Mask of the Lunar Eclipse is headed to the West for the first time in a remastered version coming to Xbox consoles in early 2023.

This seriously creepy horror game was only released for the Wii in Japan in 2008, though we eventually managed to play it through a sneaky fan translation, and can officially confirm that it’s 100% terrifying. You need some really strong nerves to wander around haunted houses taking photos of ghastly specters, that’s all we’re saying.

Here are more official Koei Tecmo details and plenty of screenshots to take a look at;

Fatal Frame: Mask of the Lunar Eclipse takes place a decade after five girls mysteriously disappeared at a festival on Rogetsu Island, an island in southern Japan. While all of the girls were eventually rescued, their memories were lost, with only the faint recollection of a single tune and a seemingly possessed masked woman dancing in the moonlight. Now, ten years later, still with no recollection of the events surrounding her disappearance, two of the five girls have died, discovered with their faces covered and found tragically posing and crying. The remaining three girls now head to the spooky island to solve the mystery of their friends’ deaths, while also uncovering the mystery of the memories left behind.

As the girls explore the western-style mansions and abandoned hospitals on Rogetsu Island, they’ll rely on the light of the moon and a dim flashlight for clues. The story progresses by uncovering relics like old newspaper articles and notes that help the girls unravel the island’s secret past. As they explore, the girls will also encounter a series of spirits. They will need to use a classic Fatal Frame from the franchise, the Camera Obscura, to repel vengeful ghosts, sealing their power by photographing them. Throughout the game, the girls will need to equip stronger lenses and change different films to capture the more powerful spirits, while using the camera to capture “things that cannot be seen” to help them find the evidence they need to remember. his haunting past.

The remastered game features an all-new Photo Mode, along with new and modified costumes, and improved graphics including improved shadow and light rendering, providing a more immersive and terrifying experience. Additionally, the in-game movies and character models have been enhanced to deliver a story that shines, both narratively and aesthetically, as the remaining three girls try to rediscover their past before becoming victims once again.
