Do you like retro FPS games reminiscent of the glory days of Doom, Quake, Hexen, Heretic and old school Duke Nukem? Then you may already know about the return of Amid Evil from the team at New Blood Interactive. As well as a huge discount on the Steam Spring Sale, there’s even more to come with the announcement of an expansion pack style DLC and a release date for Amid Evil VR which sees the shooter rebuilt from zero for VR.
From the New Blood publishing collective behind games like Dusk and Ultrakill, Amid Evil is the kind of goofy FPS mayhem that will make fans of old-school PC games incredibly happy. Filled with ridiculous magical weapons to unleash on the hordes of evil across a range of beautiful and varied open levels that are, of course, filled with secrets and mysteries to uncover, Amid Evil is simply a delight.
Now the whole game has been rebuilt from the ground up for VR as Amid Evil VR. New Blood says, “This isn’t some half-baked version of Amid Evil ported to VR, this is the real deal,” and it certainly looks like it in the trailer below. Weapons can be equipped in either hand, allowing you to attack your foes with your array of lightning tridents, spinning axes, power swords, and cyber bowling balls.
Amid Evil VR will launch on April 20 on Steam and the Meta Quest store. It supports Meta Quest 2 with SteamVR, which means it should be compatible with most top VR headsets like Valve Index and HTC Vive. More details, as well as where to book, can be found on the New Blood website.
However, that’s just the tip of the iceberg: the original Amid Evil will be getting an “expansion pack-style DLC” titled Amid Evil: The Black Labyrinth. It is a complete prequel to the events of the main game, where players will travel to the eponymous Black Labyrinth to defeat the guardian of the aptly named Ax of the Black Labyrinth. This expansion is currently undated, although you can wishlist it on Steam right now.
Those of you who are intrigued by everything here and haven’t played the original Amid Evil yet are in luck: the base game is currently on sale for 70% off on Steam, meaning you can pick up a modern classic for just $5.99 USD / £4.79 GBP, but you’ll need to act fast as the deal ends on March 23.
If you want to take it a step further, a New Blood FPS Trilogy Pack gets you Amid Evil, Dusk and Ultrakill for 52% off, meaning the three-game pack costs just $31.25 / £24.20.
For something a little different, New Blood is also in development as an isometric Fallout-style RPG with a rather striking retro-futuristic aesthetic. If that’s not enough for you, we’ve picked out more of the best classic PC games you can play in 2023 as well as the best VR games on PC.
