After 7 years of waiting, we learn that Civilization VI will be entitled to a successor in the years to come.
If there’s one strategy game series that’s survived decades, it’s Civilization. Launched in 1991, it has been enriched over the years with many new features, finally perfecting this famous and very addictive “come on, one more ride” which made the success of the saga. But now, since 2016 and Civilization 6, we have not heard of a new episode of the series.. There has certainly been a fair amount of DLC for Civ VI, but many are waiting for a proper sequel, once again with plenty of new gameplay features.
Is Civilization VII coming?
So when Civilization VI recently celebrated its seventh anniversary, Firaxis was able to lift the lid on a well-kept, albeit fairly obvious, secret: a new installment in the Sid Meier’s Civilization series is currently in development. It was Ed Beach, Lead Designer of Civilization VI, who was able to talk about it. We thus discover a small change in the team that will be in charge of this sequel: Steven Martin, the boss of the studio, recently left the latter and it is Heather Hazen who assumes her role for the sequel: “ I’m thrilled to have this opportunity to bring the studio’s legacy to life, starting with an announcement: Firaxis is currently developing the next iteration of the legendary Civilization franchise.“.
Impossible for the moment to know if it will be Civilization VII, or a type of spin-off like Revolution or Beyond Earth.. One thing seems certain: we should hear it in the coming months, especially since the release of Marvel’s Midnight Suns, Firaxis seems to have carte blanche to develop a new episode worthy of the name of the series.
