Ed Sheeran performed at the MTV Video Music Awards for the first time in four years

Ed Sheeran’s performance gave MTV Video Music Awards’ viewers the “Shivers!”

Sheeran, who is 30, strumming his guitar and wearing black jeans and a t-shirt, performed “Shivers”, his new single, from Toyota’s Brooklyn Bridge Park Stage in a prerecorded segment.

“Ooh! I love it when it’s like that” he sang. “Oh baby, you want to dance till the sun cracks/ And when they say it’s over, we’ll bring the party back.

Rita Ora presented Sheeran before she took to the stage. She described the “Bad Habits” singer as the “best person” ever.

“Shivers,” released Friday, is the third release on Sheeran’s forthcoming album = (pronounced Equals). It will be available on the shelves Oct. 29.

Sheeran’s debut album, Bad Habits, is nominated at the show for four VMAs: Video of the Year, Best Art Direction, Best Choreography, and Song of the Summer.

His performance of “Shivers”, his first VMAs performance, was his 2017 performance of a medley of “Shape of You” and Lil Uzi Vert’s “XO Tour Llif3.”

He also won the 2017 Artist of the Year award, his second VMA win after winning best male video for “Sing” in 2014.

Sheeran’s single “Visiting Hours” was released in August. It was written after the March death by Michael Gudinski, his mentor and friend.

Sheeran stated that “= (Equals), is a very personal record and one which means a lot” in a statement. My life has changed tremendously over the last few years. I got married, became father, and experienced loss. These topics are what I reflect upon over the course the album. It’s my coming-of age record. I can’t wait for the next chapter to be shared with you.

Cherry Seaborn is the Grammy winner, and they welcomed Lyra Antarctica to their home in August 2020. Two songs on the album will address fatherhood while three others will be about love.

Sheeran shared previously on Instagram that he started work on the record in June 2017, and that it was “a long, slow process” to bring it to fruition.

Doja Cat hosts the MTV Video Music Awards. They air live from New York City at 8 p.m. ET
