Two iconic movie figures facing off in court, a story that captured global attention. The legal dispute is also chronicled in a production available on HBO Max

The highly publicized legal battle between Johnny Depp and Amber Heard became a media frenzy that could only have happened in this era. With millions of viewers every day, TikTok broadcasts, memes about the couple and much of the world watching for the final verdict, the court case became an international spectacle. HBO Max quickly seized on the case to premiere the documentary Johnny v. Amber: The Last Trial.

The footage divides its narrative into two 48-minute episodes. The first, “Johnny’s Story” focuses on Depp’s side of the story, while “Amber’s Story” explores Heard’s perspective. The approach allows viewers to see the case from both angles and come to their own conclusions.

This is a sequel to the production titled Johnny vs Amber, which takes as its starting point the Pirates in the Caribbean star’s complaint against British tabloid The Sun after its managing editor, Dan Wotton, published an article in 2018 that described him as a “wife beater.” The High Court dismissed his lawsuit and although he appealed, he was unsuccessful; so the press began to dig into the reasons for his divorce unraveling a relationship of physical and psychological violence.

On the other hand, the second part focuses on the trial held between April and June 2022, related to Depp’s lawsuit against his ex-wife in the U.S. courts. It is no surprise to anyone that finally the court declared both the artist and Heard guilty of acts of defamation.

However, she was ordered to pay civil damages five times higher than what she would receive from the actor. The documentary hints that social media played a crucial role in shaping public opinion, with hashtags like #JusticeForJohnny influencing the narrative, further suggesting that obsessive fandom may have even influenced the sentencing.

The official synopsis notes that the footage features intimate access to Johnny Depp’s lawyers, legal experts and journalists, offering a forensic account of key evidence and turning points in the case: “Depp is one of the biggest stars of his generation, but his reputation is in tatters after losing a libel case in London in which a judge ruled that journalists could rightly call him a ‘wife-beater’. Johnny puts it all on the line as he takes on his ex-wife Heard in U.S. courts to clear his name,” reads the streaming service’s description.

Produced by Warner Bros. Discovery U.K., Johnny vs. Amber: The Last Trial is available to watch in the HBO Max catalog.
