He Movement for a credible cycling (MPCC) recently published their “credibility figures” in which they take stock of what happened in 2022 regarding WorldTour and ProTeam riders and cases of doping or use of banned substances such as tramadol. The entity points out that there are 29 suspected cases and highlights the case of Nairobi Quintana, who is one of two cyclists on the world and professional team who has been sanctioned for the use of these substances.

Nairo Quintana was disqualified from the Tour de Francia 2022 after the use of tramadol has been verified in two dried blood tests. The Colombian cyclist took the case to the CAS, but the court ratified the sanction imposed by the International Cycling Union. This situation led to his departure from Arkéa-Samsic and since then he has not been able to sign with any WorldTour or ProTeam team.

The CPPM pointed out that the 29 cases of 2022 in world cycling they were spread across 15 different countries, in which genders and disciplines were also combined. “This is the second worst score in eight years (after 2019)”, underlined the entity which then underlined that in a more detailed analysis “reveals that by limiting itself to the professional men (world teams and professional teams), this is in fact the lowest number (2 cases) ever recorded since the Festina affair!” One of these two riders is Nairo Quintana, who was sanctioned by the UCI for using tramadol in the Big Loop.

The Movement for Credible Cycling claimed that the use of the substance had caused his disqualification from the 2022 Tour de France, but stressed that this sanction didn’t get a reprieve As it is not a substance considered illegal to date, the entity however pointed out what happened with Arkéa-Samsic, that one of the teams registered with the MPCC and after this happened ended the contractual relationship with the Colombian rider.

“His team, however, continued to respect the rules of our movement, as the runner was immediately excluded from competition for his team. Arkéa-Samsic, What didn’t keep it in the model at the end of the season.” the specified entity. It’s important to remember that Quintana had signed a renewal until 2025 with the France team, but his departure was confirmed in September.

Since then, the Colombian has had many complications to find a team to play the season 2023 and although he has a huge trajectory and experience, he has not been able to find a team to be able to run in the most important competitions on the calendar. This generated huge uncertainty among cycling fans, however, it was the Credible Cycling Movement itself that confirmed what was happening.

“In compliance with our very strict ethical standards, let us add that any team A member of the MPCC subsequently agreed to enter the Colombian corridor, and that this attitude seems to have become indispensable for everyone”, highlighted the entity in the credibility figures.
