The High Representative for Foreign Policy, Joseph Borrellasked European countries on Wednesday to provide Ukraine combat tanks, after notifying that the war enters a decisive phase and the dispute can be resolved “this spring and summer”.

In an intervention before the European Parliament In estasburg, the head of European diplomacy insisted that European military aid must not only continue but “increase”. “I call on all European countries that have modern combat cars and effective which accumulate dust in the barracks which give them to Ukraine”, he underlined in front of the MEPs, insisting on the fact that the phase enters a decisive phase.

“The war will be decided this spring and this summer”, he warned, to ask for speed in the supply of weapons after having regretted that the military allies of Kyiv spent “a lot of time” discussing the issue of Leopard while the Russian army prepared an offensive in the region of Donbass.

In this sense, the High Representative moved away from the scenario of an escalation of the conflict due to the dispatch of Western tanks and asked for the reinforcement of these supplies. “They were announced and there was no world war,” he said.

For Borrell, the military situation on the ground is “worrying” for Ukraine, since Russia now has 360,000 troops on Ukrainian territory, more than in previous phases of the war. The Ukrainian army is now at a disadvantage in terms of manpower, she warned, to underline that sending arms and ammunition from Europe is even more important.

At the same time as he considered the importance of obtaining tanks and ammunition for Ukrainethe head of community diplomacy indicated that he would redouble diplomatic efforts to advance a peaceful resolution to the conflict.

“To win the peace, you must first win the war, and you can help Ukraine militarily and make the necessary diplomatic efforts so that peace comes as soon as possible. These are not contradictory things, ”he defended himself.

In this sense, he said that he would ask the Secretary General to United Nations, Antonio Guterresthat he is championing a mediation process with Russia, although from the outset he warned that so far everyone who has spoken with Russian President Vladimir Putin to stop the war “has failed”.

Amid the debate over Europe’s increased military weight, Borrell said he was guided by “realism” and that the EU was not living a “doves and hawks” debate. “I don’t have a fighting spirit, but we have to discuss how to achieve peace and for that we have to continue to support Ukraine militarily, more than we have done so far” , he explained.

Everything to insist that the war in Eastern Europe must be a “warning signal” that its military capacity must be greater and have a “more powerful” defense industry.

According to him, Europe must prepare for a “long war” and must be ready for an “attrition” contest in which logistics and information will be essential, in which case he warned that he is in the interest of Europeans to act geopolitically because the same Wagner group that operates in the Donbass region is the one that constitutes a threat in other regions of interest for Europe such as the Sahel.
