The director general of the World Health Organization (WHO) , Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, conveyed to the Chinese Prime Minister, Li Keqiang, the “need” for a “stronger collaboration” to determine the origins of covid-19 , and that it is “based on science and evidence”.

In a message published last night through his official Twitter profile, Tedros thanked Li for his support to “strengthen the WHO” and indicated that he had talked with him about reinforcing global vaccination campaigns , to ensure that 70% of the global population receives the serum against the coronavirus.

“Solidarity is key to ensuring access and affordability of vaccines,” he added.

Following Saturday’s meeting, China’s Foreign Ministry released a statement noting that Tedros said “WHO adheres to scientific principles to investigate the origin of the virus and opposes the politicization” of that process.

For his part, Li called for “unity and cooperation” in the global fight against the SARS-CoV-2 coronavirus and agreed on the “importance” of the accessibility and affordable cost of vaccines to “form an immune barrier.”

According to the Chinese premier, the goal should be “to use scientific and technological means to develop effective medicines that help defeat the new coronavirus , the common enemy of mankind, as soon as possible.”

Tedros held another meeting today with Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi, who assured that the sale of more than 2.1 billion doses of anti-covid vaccines to more than 120 countries and international organizations is “the largest emergency humanitarian operation” that China launches since the founding, in 1949, of the People’s Republic.
