According to Pan American Health Organization, more than 700,000 people lose their lives to suicide each year, and the majority of deaths, about 77%, occur in low- and middle-income countries. For this reason, it is important to listen, support and not ignore the warning signs of people who may be thinking about suicide.

In Colombia, according to figures provided by the Ministry of Health and Social Protectionthe death rate from suicide has fallen from 5.1 per 100,000 inhabitants in 2005 to 5.28 in 2020.

In September 2022, Deputy Minister of Public Health and Service Delivery Jaime Urrego said that the suicidal behavior lived in the country is linked to problems such as the weakening of social support networks, school violence or family dysfunction, among others.

“Suicidal behavior is a serious mental health problem linked to weakened social support networks, social and economic disparities, acculturation, school violence, family dysfunction, low self-esteem, depression and alcohol use,” Urrego said. .

According to figures from the National Administrative Department of Statistics DANISHin 2021 there were 2,962 suicides in Colombia, and to this figure Vice Minister Urrego added a disturbing fact, “for every suicide among women, there are about four among men”.

Faced with the worrying figures, Urrego assured that the issue of mental health should be a matter of the State and of the citizens, which is why comprehensive and continuous care should be reinforced in the face of suicidal behavior.

“Over the past decade, there have been significant advances in mental health in the country, with the publication of the Mental Health Policy and the National Strategy for the Prevention of Suicidal Behaviors; However, transforming the collective suffering of individuals, families and communities poses particular public policy challenges for our country,” the Deputy Minister said.

To deal with possible suicidal behavior, the Ministry of Health and Social Protection through the campaign #Let’sTalkMentalHealth He shared some recommendations to keep in mind:
