Madrid, March 1. The Spanish tuna fleet will participate in the world conference on the oceans Our Ocean, which begins this Thursday in Panama, with all its catches certified with the APR seal that certifies responsible fishing with the environment.

Thus, the tuna boats respect the agreement to which they committed themselves in the same forum six years ago, as recalled this Wednesday in a press release the Organization of Associated Producers of Large Freezer Tuna Boats (Opagac).

The general manager of Opagac, Julio Morón, will participate in the conference and will reaffirm his commitment to the global sustainability of the tropical tuna fishery, in which he has worked since 2010.

To this end, according to the press release, it will commit to continue making progress in the internationalization of the Tuna from Responsible Fishing (APR) standard, voluntarily promoted by the fleet, as well as in the expansion of the MSC environmental certification, which already scores half of its catches. , to the remaining 50%.

The Opagac boats extract 360,000 tons of tuna and with the APR badge also guarantee the best working conditions on board “even above the requirements established in Convention 188 of the International Labor Organization (ILO), according to the same source.

Opagac recalled that last July the fleet of tuna seiners became the first in the world to obtain the MSC blue seal, the most prestigious in this field, for half of its catches in the three oceans in which it operates ( Indian, Pacific and Atlantic).

This means that some 180,000 tonnes, which represents 3% of global catches, already carry the MSC label.

Researchers, activists, officials and the private sector are converging this Thursday and Friday in Panama in the eighth session of the “Our Ocean” conference, in the hope of reaching more resources and consensus to promote the protection of the oceans .
