Since the Russian president, Vladimir Putin, announced that he was starting a “military operation” against Ukraine, world leaders have spoken out; Among them, Pope Francis has shown his concern about the situation that has the world on edge.

The Vatican’s top representative had left his duties to strike up a conversation with the Russian embassy. However, he now has a new request: he calls for the ‘urgent’ opening of humanitarian corridors for Ukraine.

“I think of the elderly, of all those who are currently seeking refuge, of the mothers who flee with their children. They are brothers and sisters for whom it is urgent to open humanitarian corridors and who must be welcomed”, declared the Pope at the end of his traditional Angelus prayer in Saint Peter’s Square.

A few days ago the pope went to the Russian embassy to start a conversation about the invasion of Ukraine. The pontiff mentioned feeling worried and alarmed by the constant attacks on Ukraine.

His restlessness lies in the war , so the pope left all his tasks to start a conversation with Alexander Avdeev.

For more than half an hour, representatives of the Catholic Church and the Kremlin gathered for the pope to make his unease known, after it was recently said that “the tragic scenarios that everyone feared are unfortunately becoming a reality.” according to a statement from the Holy See.

These types of visits are not meetings that usually take place. However, despite how unusual it seems, it makes room to show interest in dialogue from the Vatican. The protocols had no present and as Secretary of State Pietro Parolin stated this Thursday, there is still “space for negotiation”, despite the fact that “Russian military operations have begun in Ukrainian territory”.

Zelensky files lawsuit against Russia at International Court of Justice

The president of the invaded country, Volodímir Zelenski, reported this Sunday, February 27, that he has filed a lawsuit with the International Court of Justice (ICJ).

With the aim of preserving his nation and giving an account of what is happening in his territory, Zelenski communicated through his official Twitter account that he presented “his lawsuit against Russia before the ICJ”, the main legal body of the Organization of the United Nations (UN).

For the Ukrainian president, “Russia must be held accountable for manipulating the notion of genocide to justify aggression” , since, to date, innocent civilians have died and among them there are children.

“We request an urgent decision ordering Russia to cease military activity now and we expect the trials to start next week,” Volodymyr wrote, hoping the ICJ will settle disputes between each state in Europe.

The Court, based in The Hague, is a mechanism that both Russia and Ukraine have used in recent years around the conflict in the Donbas region, which pits the Ukrainian Army against the Donetsk and Lugansk separatists.

It must be remembered that the ICJ is an international court dedicated to settling disputes between countries in accordance with International Law, but it does not have any way of enforcing its rulings, something that practically remains at the will of the States.
